Bunnahabhain
(BUNNA-hah-ven)
Bunnahabhain is situated on the north east coast of Islay, overlooking the Sound of Islay, near Caol Ila. Bunnahabhain was built in 1881, and its remote location, like with other distilleries off the beaten track, meant that cottages for workers were also built (some of which are available for holiday accommodation).
Bunnahabhain's initial aim was to produce Whisky for blending only. While it was used across the industry, it performed a central role in three famous blends: Famous Grouse, Cutty Sark and, in time, Black Bottle.
Following a short period of closure in the early 1980s, Bunnahabhain "emerged" as a Single Malt. There have been successive owners since, but its current owners, Distell, spent £11 million on renewal.
Official bottlings of Bunnahabhain are generally unpeated, despite the distillery being on the "isle of peat". There is an extensive range of bottlings up to 40 years old and some from Feis Ile, the annual Islay Whisky Festival. However, peated versions exist, both in official versions and from independents. Some state "heavily peated on the label while others are described as Bunnahabhain Moine. Finally, some independents alos bottle a heavily peated Bunnahabhain under the name Staoisha.
