By now, you probably already know that you should be wearing SPF daily to protect your face (and lips!) from the sun's damaging UV rays. (And not that you need a reminder, but everyone needs protection since we know that people with all skin tones can get skin cancer.) But there's a little area of skin that even the most seasoned of sunscreen wearers often overlook: the scalp. "We tend to forget that any exposed scalp can get sunburned, and be at increased risk for developing skin cancer," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse. Not to mention that sun exposure can also damage the hair's cuticle (a.k.a. its outer layer), leading to brittleness and dryness, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

And while in theory, you could put any regular sunscreen on your scalp, we have a feeling you're not itching to run a creamy lotion through your roots or even across your bald head. (We don't blame you.) So, to protect your scalp from sunburn, try a spray sunscreen (which is easier to apply), a sunscreen powder (which will soak up grease and won't cause unwanted buildup), or, best of all, a formula specifically designed for your scalp and strands. Whatever you choose, though, make sure it has at least SPF 30 (no, 100 isn't necessary) and for extra protection, you may way to consider a sun hat, too.

Ahead, we asked dermatologists to recommend the best scalp sunscreens, sprays, and powders—including ones from beloved brands like Neutrogena, Coola, and Sun Bum—all of which you should add to your list of beach essentials.

Mineral sunscreen powders are easy to apply and can double as dry shampoo, says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Keira Barr. Though this one is great for the scalp, you can also use it on your face. You can set your makeup and get sun protection on often forgotten spots like your eyelids and your hands, adds Barr.

"This product has a special canister that will dispense at any angle, making it a good choice for spraying on hard to reach areas," says Chang. It won't wreck your 'do, either—the spray is non-greasy, oil-free, and won't weigh strands down, making it great for thin hair. It's also water-resistant, so you can enjoy swimming and outdoor workouts without worry.

If you'd rather not stock your beach tote with multiple sunscreens, try this zinc-based full-body sunscreen spray. It's particularly good for the scalp because it's formulated with transparent zinc, says Chang. That means you get all the great protection zinc has to offer, without the white residue. Plus, it's water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.

Sunscreen foams and mousses can be applied to both the scalp and hair strands to protect them from UV damage, without leaving a greasy trace. Consider alcohol-based foams like this one, says Shainhouse. The more moisturizing skin formulations will weigh hair down, leaving it limp.

A stick sunscreen will weigh hair down more than other formulas, but it's a great option if you need extra coverage, says Shainhouse. Use this hardworking option if you have bald spots or thick, dense hair, but skip it if strands are thin or you're prone to oil buildup.
