By now, you probably already know that you should be wearing SPF daily to protect your face (and lips!) from the sun's damaging UV rays. (And not that you need a reminder, but everyone needs protection since we know that people with all skin tones can get skin cancer.) But there's a little area of skin that even the most seasoned of sunscreen wearers often overlook: the scalp. "We tend to forget that any exposed scalp can get sunburned, and be at increased risk for developing skin cancer," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse. Not to mention that sun exposure can also damage the hair's cuticle (a.k.a. its outer layer), leading to brittleness and dryness, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
And while in theory, you could put any regular sunscreen on your scalp, we have a feeling you're not itching to run a creamy lotion through your roots or even across your bald head. (We don't blame you.) So, to protect your scalp from sunburn, try a spray sunscreen (which is easier to apply), a sunscreen powder (which will soak up grease and won't cause unwanted buildup), or, best of all, a formula specifically designed for your scalp and strands. Whatever you choose, though, make sure it has at least SPF 30 (no, 100 isn't necessary) and for extra protection, you may way to consider a sun hat, too.
Ahead, we asked dermatologists to recommend the best scalp sunscreens, sprays, and powders—including ones from beloved brands like Neutrogena, Coola, and Sun Bum—all of which you should add to your list of beach essentials.
