During Thursday afternoon's daily briefing on COVID-19 in Ohio, about 50 protesters gathered on the steps of the Ohio Statehouse. For the first time, they chanted in opposition to the stay at home order put in place by Governor Mike DeWine.

They said their message was, they're ready to get back to work.

"We still need to go to work," Ben Shuler said." "We need to function as a society."

Shuler said he had to drop out of his classes at Columbus State. He said the pandemic has put a major toll on his family.

"I'm a single Dad," Shuler said. "My daughter can't go to daycare now. I still have to work. I'm having to take her with me. The economy is shut down. This is crazy. We need to go back to work."

Another woman who would not give her name said the orders given by the governor are unconstitutional.

"My husband lost his job," she said. "When everything began he was laid off. We were all told unemployment would be there for us, and it's not. It's not there for many people who need it."

The protesters grew so loud, they could be heard inside of the press conference while Dr. Amy Acton was speaking.

She was quick to address them.

"There are protesters outside," Dr. Acton said. "People are worried. They are afraid. They're afraid about their jobs. I want you to know we are working just as hard on the recovery from this."

Dr. Acton said she understands the fear, but the work being done by staying home, is saving lives.

"I want you to know that every move we are making is based on the best science," Dr. Acton said. "We will not leave your side as we get through this journey ahead."

A Columbus police officer said the protest stayed calm and peaceful the entire time. There was no violence, and it wrapped up shortly after the press conference.

The protesters would not say what organization or group if any, they were with.
